These materials will help my students in numerous ways! The mindful games and resources will help students learn how to manage and cope with their trauma both past, current and future. As educators, we can no longer just educate the student, we must address their mental health needs before we can address their academic needs. As a social worker, I know the importance of teaching such skills in order to promote a healthy, resilient human being that becomes a productive member of our society. The majority of my fifth grade students begin the year reading at the end of second grade and beginning of third grade. Evidenced based research proves that students’ vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency can improve greatly when reading non-fiction text. I picked non-fiction text and Scholastic News that support our common core curriculum for social studies which is typically a challenge for students to understand and learn. The Yoga balls will allow flexible seating for students as they work in small groups together and with me. The Yoga balls will also allow my kinesthetic learners the opportunity to get their physical needs met while learning.
