These inner-city public school children (TN) are in desperate need of access to a book they can relate to and connect with so that they don't dread reading for the remaining high school years; reluctance to read will cause them to suffer across the board. Many of them are from inner-city "neighborhoods" and have not been raised around books/reading. Our school is moving to one of the top 3 in the district, but our data shows that we are still failing to meet the needs of our struggling readers/learners. This book makes reading and learning accessible for them, and they LOVE it. Actually, last year several copies that I had of this book were taken from my classroom by my so-called reluctant readers because they couldn't wait any longer in class to finish it!!! They wanted to take it home and read it on their own! How awesome is that? Hearing, "Ms. H...that's the 1st book I ever read and loved!" shows that Sherman Alexie's novel DOES have the capacity to break "the cycle"!!!
