The students in my first grade classroom are from a rural community in Oklahoma. Many live on farms and ranches. Some are animal lovers, others participate in rodeos, basketball, and gymnastics. They are good students and hard workers, supported by parents, relatives, and the community. Most of the students in my class receive free or reduced priced lunches. The small school where I teach has one classroom teacher per grade. The children are a tight-knit group. Most of them have attended school together every year since pre-kindergarten.
