Students will take on the responsibilities of engineers, botanists, and ichthyologists to design, build, and maintain an aquaponics system (a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics) in our classroom. The clay fertilizer and bins will be home to the lettuce and herbs students will grow and use to prepare a variety of dishes, while the plumbing and pump components will maintain our aquatic teammates that will fertilize our plants. This project gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of ecosystem dynamics and the engineering process to address real-world problems. Students will engage in this project through the lens of tackling nutritional concerns-- from the local level of Los Angeles food deserts to global issues of food security.
