My school is in an urban area and serves an impoverished population. My students are 13-14 years old and mostly African American. Most of them come from households with one parent working multiple jobs. At this age, they have to start taking care of themselves and their younger cousins and/or siblings. For this reason, school becomes less of a priority in some families. They have a difficult time "letting go" of hardships in their home life to relate to their studies and be imaginative. They really do feel like no one understands them. However, they value their education. They find trust and work hard for people who believe in their ability to succeed. They are grateful to come to school and do not want to leave at the end of the day. Everyday, they are facing tough choices of who they are going to be and what kind of life they envision for themselves in the future. They have big dreams, but they are unsure if they have the resources to get there.
