Teaching middle school is the best kept secret in the entire universe. My students have the enthusiasm of small children and they interpret information in ways adults never will. They are filled with moodiness and unbridled emotion. They would lose their heads if it were not attached to their bodies. My students are very inquisitive, always asking, "But why?" They have the ability to take content and make new things from it. I teach at a predominantly African-American, public, middle school in rural North Carolina. Ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My students do not have much, but they appreciate the small things in life.
