My school has a diverse population of K-5th graders in Austin, TX. My school's philosophy includes allowing students to learn through their interests and passions. It's not unusual to walk out onto the playground and see children as young as 5 years old reading a book under a tree or on a bench in the reading garden. We use both the Daily 5 and CAFE for teaching reading and as part of the program, students are required to choose 5-8 books of interest to read each day. All of their reading instruction comes from the classroom library where they choose books to read and learn. This makes a well stocked library an absolute necessity. Reading is the foundation of all learning in our school and it is obvious that the kids are hooked because as you walk down the halls kids of all ages have their noses in a book.
