As a history teacher, I try and use the past to teach the students about the world they are currently living in. These books will allow me to introduce them to diverse characters and issues that are relevant today. We will be able to use them for book studies and discussion starters that will link to both past events as well as current. I know my students will enjoy participating in reading discussions using issues that are touching their lives today. I also hope they will become independent readers as well as thinkers.
