Urban students need a great education just like every student in our nation. As an inner city teacher teaching English in the classroom I was surprised to find that my students didn't understand the struggles that so many came through to give them the freedoms and liberties that they take for granted. That motivated me to teach my students of the past as well as the present. Though an English teacher I feel a responsibility to educate, challenge, and inspire in a variety of ways. As the majority of the students that I teach are "at-risk", I think that anything that is deemed classic and engages them is a winning combination. Now, of course, they need enough books to read as a class. Students at our school struggle with so much and have become hardened. The technology, and opportunity to touch the 21st century that they live in, in a small way, may give many hope and inspiration in a very tough community.
