I teach 2nd grade at an Engineering Elementary school in South Carolina. We are located in a community that once flourished but the town is now poverty stricken. The school is now the center of the community and practically the only positive aspect of our students' lives. The students have little, but come to school each and every day eager to learn and better themselves. Their hope is that one day they can rise out of their current destitution and make something of themselves. Very few of our students get the support they need from home either because their parents are high school dropouts, drug addicted, incarcerated, or absentee. I not only feel as if I am their teacher, I truly feel like I am a mother to my students. One they desperately need. I genuinely hope that they will all go on to graduate high school, graduate college, and lead productive, quality lives.
