I am a history/social studies teacher at an urban high school in Massachusetts. The school is a technical vocational school which offers academics and a trade (ranging from culinary to auto repair). This attracts a diverse group of students with a wide range of abilities and needs. Although the school is considered under-performing, the students are passionate learners and critical thinkers. Our school is large and does not have sufficient funding for textbooks, technology, and basic classroom supplies. Last year as a first year teacher, I borrowed technology and was successful in engaging my students in social studies. The students loved learning about history and different cultures through Skype interviews, research projects, and film. I hope to have another positive experience with using technology with my 120 sophomore students this year.
