My kids are smart, sweet, sometimes shy, sometimes sassy, some speak no English while others speak English very well. But all are extremely eager to learn English, use it correctly, and fit in-- like every other student. Education is very important to my students and they try very hard to understand everything, but when they can't use English right away, we use visuals to convey meaning. With this Electronic Copyboard (or an interactive whiteboard), we can show our students what things are, what things sound like, and they will understand. For example, last week, I was trying to explain t a new Spanish-speaking ELL (she speaks no English and my Spanish isn't fantastic) about winter. The winter she knows in Central America is extremely different from the one we experience here in the Northeast. Since it was just the two of us working, I used a computer to show her pictures and newscasts. Had it been a class, it would have been more difficult for all the students to see the screen.
