Many of my high school students come to school very early in the morning and are still there even when I leave on late nights because they don't have a better place to go. 80% of our students eat a free or reduced lunch. They come to my classroom hungry, but not just for food. They come begging, but not just for spare change for the vending machine. They come hungry to expand their opportunities and begging for instruction that will open up more life paths. Many of my students have lofty goals of becoming a nurse, a lawyer, or a teacher like me. I must teach them in a way that can set them on a path to make their dreams a reality. Literacy will be absolutely vital for them.
