We are a very small rural school in Montana. I am a first year teacher, so I have yet to meet all my students! However, I have been in my room, and discovered that we are lacking in percussion instruments! I would like my students to learn about music first hand, by having the opportunity to create it, rather than passively experiencing it. I believe that creating is essential to developing lifelong joy--which is the ultimate goal for any teacher. I also believe that playing instruments fulfills a child's developmental needs through tactile-kinesthetic learning. By handling percussion instruments they are developing coordination, rhythm, and timbre; learning about the science of physics; and building a sense of shared community through ensemble playing. Lastly, playing an instrument is fun and by experiencing joyful learning at an early age the groundwork is laid for a lifelong learner!
