I am teaching 29 first grade students in an over-crowded, self-contained, 100+ year old classroom in the city of Newark. My class does not receive federal funding from the bilingual department because my students have been mainstreamed into the regular student population due to their ability to speak English. Therefore, I get a mere $80.00 each year (discretionary money), to buy the classroom supplies and learning tools that I need. My twenty-nine first grade students would truly benefit by having a classroom "Literary Lounge." This would be a special area of the classroom where students could go and sit comfortably to practice their reading skills by reading to themselves or to each other.
