Seniors in my two First Year Writing sections will select one of the three texts to be read in a "book club" or "literature circle" format, where they will read, discuss, and write about the texts. This will culminate in a large, multi-modal group project that teaches other students in the class about their book's premise. Through the reading of these graphic novels, students will explore historical instances of xenophobia, discrimination, and oppression, issues faced by many of my students and their families. In their small groups, students will examine the protagonist's struggles, the novel as a chronicle of American and/or world history, and their own roles as stewards of this information.
