My school is in the middle of a neighborhood called "The Nations". The families are in a low socioeconomic bracket and many have moved from another country. The teachers and administrators at my school have a passion for the kids and families that we serve. In my experience here, I have found that it takes a special educator to serve these families. There are challenges and situations that arise that require patience, love, and perseverance. The students are sweet and energetic, but come to school with heavy baggage from home. Lack of proper nutrition, respect for themselves and others, and lack of academic confidence makes teaching them somewhat of a challenge. Various strategies are necessary to give the students what they need emotionally and academically. However, there is so much pride and accomplishment when we meet our goals. The students make this a place that I love to teach and I know that they feel loved by all the teachers as well.
