They are very hard-working students but the come from very poor families. Often, there is no one home who speaks English, much less to facilitate the content material. Many of them have been retained and are at a high risk for dropping out. The school has 97% of its students on free or reduced lunch, and we also send back packs home with food for the weekend. Despite their challenges, they are showing up to school everyday willing to work and improve their language and academic skills.
