We are a Title I school as well as a partial magnet for the traditional program of studies offered in our district. Our ESL student population has grown each year and created a diversity which has enriched and changed our school for the better! Our school, however, continues to rank in the bottom of test score results in the district and state. We have many, many students who are at risk for failure in the future and live lives that are not stable or filled with many affirmations and accomplishments. Most of our students are inner city kids and are very street smart, creative, and capable but at the same time, their environment, if toxic, seems to remove any real belief that they can be anything different or that they can achieve anything more than their parents or guardians. By fifth grade, I see a literal "slump" in attitudes, vocabulary, and even postures. An apathy in too many fifth graders is evident and the self-motivation they need to take with them is gone.
