The majority of my students come from poverty. They are children of the working poor, of those incarcerated, and of those who struggle with addiction. Many of my students speak a second language and some are newly arrived to the United States. Several of my students are the first in their families to have the opportunity to graduate from high school. Our school is a Title One school which is very diverse and includes a refugee population. The demographics of this school also includes a significant number of children with special needs. Our faculty and staff work long and hard hours to fulfill our students educational, emotional, and social needs. It is an tremendous challenge, but we believe that every child has a right to a quality education and the opportunity to succeed. Our administration and teachers have been very resourceful in collecting materials for our students to use in class; however, our funding for these materials has been reduced in several areas.
