Theodosius Dobzhansky, famed American geneticist and evolutionary biologist, stated, “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.” With this in mind, eighth-graders at E C School are applying scientific ideas to construct an explanation for the anatomical similarities and differences among modern organisms and between modern and fossil organisms to infer evolutionary relationships (NGSS). I want my students to develop thinking skills and an understanding of evolution by observing, measuring, and comparing fossils. Imagine if students were able to hold in their hands the skull of a neanderthal or the skull of a 3 million year old hominid. Instead of having evolution explained to them by a textbook or a lecture, they will use their senses and reason to construct their own understanding. We are in need of a classroom set of bone-colored hominid and great ape skulls so that we can take measurements of the skulls for analysis and comparison.
