My students are in kindergarten. Some come to me knowing all of their letters and sounds, while some come to me knowing very little. We are not a Title I school, however, many of my students do not have the background knowledge or experience to begin reading on their own. Several of my students have parents who speak other languages at home and cannot read to their children at night. Therefore, story time and literacy centers at school are the only time my students hear what fluent readers sound like. My students are eager learners and love to listen to stories. They desperately want to be able to pick up a book and read on their own.
