My students are so creative and inquisitive. Because we are an International Baccalaureate MYP school, opportunities to perform outside of band or choir are few. Despite being in high poverty, and many being English Language Learners, having a creative outlet to express themselves gives them the opportunity to express without words. Like all kids, they love to explore and create with technology, and while I will provide those opportunities, this gives them some time to unplug. The one thing that they have a hard time with is failing and trying again. By having them play guitar, and possibly starting their own band, I am hoping that they will learn that failure is a learning opportunity, and not a reason to give up.
