Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent and collaborative work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: sitting on the floor, sitting in the 4 chair options we have, or utilizing other tables and stools in the classroom. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. Education has changed, and gone are the days of sitting in rows facing the teacher for 48 minutes of direct instruction. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices and to allow for more authentic collaboration with peers. The bungee chairs and lap desks allow for movement and variety as they learn, which is so beneficial not just for choice and collaboration, but especially for students who struggle with sitting for 288 minutes during the school day (Six 48-minute periods besides PE and Lunch...) I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more! I hope to implement half-time flex seating for the 2019-2020 school year: 16 regular desks and 16 other seating options.
