Included in the fifth grade units of study are the Constitution and the American Revolution. To integrate these units of study with writers workshop and with the Bank Street method of learning, my students act as reporters on our field trip to Philadelphia in May. The goal of this project/trip is for my students to express their creativity by documenting their learning and gained experiences. This project is exciting for my students and also challenges them in many ways. In preparation for the trip, the class is split into groups. Each group is responsible for researching and sharing information with the class on their particular place/topic. Within the groups, each student has a particular job. The jobs are assigned based on interest and experience. For example, if a student is typically shy, but wants to gain and/or build more confidence with public speaking, she may be assigned the task of preparing and then facilitating the interview questions.
