I teach at an inner-city school in which 83% of our students receive free or reduced price meals. More than one-fourth of the students at our school will not graduate high school, mainly because they don't have a chance of ever attending college. Some students are self-motivated and have dreams of a successful future, an idea we know will become a reality with a strong work ethic. This desire to work increases when we can place learning tools in their hands that their own families cannot afford to give to them. Many of our parents don't think their children will attend college because of a lack of funds. In our area, poverty is generational.
