Have you ever played a banana piano? A play dough drum? A musical hotdog? No? The makey makey is an amazing invention that allows students to create music with everyday objects just like those. The makey makey uses a small circuit board with alligator clips to connect to the objects you wish to use and hooks up to the computer with a USB cord. In the music room, this S.T.E.A.M (science, technology, arts, and math) based technology essentially creates an electric circuit that sends a closed loop electrical signal to the computer. This covers so many different subject areas while the students are having fun learning! The makey makey can connect to various music apps and with teacher-created mats and printed sheet music the students can create their own compositions or play familiar tunes on marshmallows or gummy bears or any items we can find in our classroom. This allows them to practice technology skills, create musical masterpieces, and be innovators and explorers!
