Creating a playful TK learning environment is my goal. My students will be able to extend their learning in our community helpers unit as they play with the professional puppets, puppet theater, and rack. They will be able to sit in a cooperative group and choose puppets to act out jobs, aiding in their language development. My "Playful TK" is a highly structured environment. Children are guided in their play and are directly instructed in all the standards that are needed for their success in kindergarten and beyond. Reading comprehension and writing cannot be developed until the necessary language skills and creative thinking is developed. "Research shows that children who engage in complex forms of socio-dramatic play have greater language skills than nonplayers, better social skills, more empathy, more imagination, and more of the subtle capacity to know what others mean. They are less aggressive and show more self-control and higher levels of thinking." Edward Miller and Joann Almon, "Why Children Need to Play in School." The gift of a puppet theater and accessories will encourage students to pretend and engage each other in play.
