I am always stressing the importance of effective line memorization for plays to my students. Students cannot work on emotional connections, listening to other actors, or motivated movement unless they have their lines memorized well. I coach students on different methods for line learning, such as writing out their lines, making a recording of the other character's lines so they can practice with the recording, and breaking their script into sections. I encourage students to read their script out loud, because actually hearing the lines as well as reading them activates two learning styles simultaneously. "It's so distracting in here with everyone talking!" is something I hear over and over when I helping students learn lines. If my students were able to "whisper" their lines, but still hear them, they could effectively learn lines in a classroom setting. The auditory feedback phone is a device which students can quietly whisper words into, and hear them more loudly in their ear. These devices are normally used in an exceptional children's classroom, so that struggling readers can read aloud, but not disturb others around them. We have a couple of these "whisper phones" at my school, but they are utilized by the EC teachers for testing purposes only. I have borrowed the few we have as an experiment in my class, and my students were VERY excited about using them, and they agreed that it would be beneficial in line learning practice. I would like to have a class set so that all my students can practice learning their lines in a whole class setting, without distracting those around them.
