We are a Title 1 school with 54% of our students receiving free/reduced lunches. Our school is a inner city school that is, 7% Caucasian, 35% Hispanic, 31% Asian and 24% African American. Our population is diverse and ever-changing. Many of our students have never been exposed to to English as a language. Most of my students have never seen a book or held a pencil, most don't own a backpack, crayons or a book. First Graders learn about the world by real life, hands-on experiences. In the world of a First grader, every day is full of wonderful experiences that shape who they become. They are introduced to not only the world of books, words, and writing, but the magic of science. In First grade they become readers, writers, mathematicians,scientists, and most important of all wonderful students with a love of learning!
