I have been teaching science in the largest urban inner-city in the state of New York for six years now. We are a small school and share our building with a middle school and an elementary school. Students come from the surrounding neighborhood and live in the projects that surround the school, made up primarily of African-Americans and Latinos. Our school has been steadily improving in the last five years, and I want that momentum to continue. The goal is to get 50 lockers set up for the seniors, and later include the juniors. 10th graders seem to be in a black hole, who can either be saved through graduation or lost as drop-outs. By providing 10th graders with something more tangible to look forward to, other than graduation, then maybe they will work a little harder in wanting to be in the 11th grade in order to graduate.
