Based on language development research, many of our speech therapy interventions use play and functional language opportunities for our students to learn to communicate with peers and adults in the classroom. They often need to build foundational language skills like attention, imitation, and understanding cause and effect before they are able to use words. These materials will help us as speech therapists provide specialized interventions to those students. Many of the items are switch adapted toys that allow students with more limited physical or cognitive abilities to independently participate in fun, engaging activities. As these resources help them progress in their foundational skills, they will be able to learn how to better communicate with peers during play, but also to communicate their basic wants and needs. These skills are not just important for their education, but essential for basic activities of daily living and greater happiness in life through connections made with the people around us. Communication is key to make and maintain those connections. These materials will help our students make greater gains in their communication skills which will allow them to make those connections that bring the best life fulfillment.
