My students are high school special education students, with learning disabilities. The are kind, caring individuals who struggle with their learning but try hard every day. Engaging them in service-learning projects gives them a voice in their education, and allows them to be actively involved. My students help plan the projects, learn about what needs the community has, and implement their service projects. Many of the projects we do in our classroom are hands-on. This allows the children to incorporate their own individual learning style into the lesson. When they are given the chance to make a difference for others, I see their faces light up and the joy they feel. I want to provide them with opportunities to learn, be engaged in their learning, and to give back through service that is tied to their curriculum. These students attend a public school that is in a very rural community in Michigan. They do not always have the resources they need to help themselves and others.
