My students go through the steps needed to prepare for their junior high careers but to fully prepare them I believe they need opportunities to learn about the issues they may face or encounter to survive and thrive. By creating an inviting and comfortable area in my classroom that students may utilize to read these books about social issues that pertain to their age group I believe we are giving students the opportunity to put tools in their toolbox to deal with these social issues effectively. I have heard too many former students come back and tell me about problems they have dealt with and feel as though I need to do more for them. If I can help students by providing a comfortable, accepting and informative area to handle the pressures of the world that awaits them, then I will be doing my job.
