The demographics tell you my students are 95% students of color, the vast majority Latino/a. Roughly 95% of them live below the poverty line. They come to our middle school in 6th grade, many of the students two, three, or four years below grade level. What the demographics don't tell you is that they are dedicated and determined, funny and ferocious, intelligent and inspired. They have a keen sense of justice and fairness. In my class, they are at the beginning stages of using their power of words to understand who they are, how their community functions, and how they can make lasting and transformational change.
