As a motivator to learn more about their city, to enhance their language skills, and to provide opportunities for speaking and listening, my students will be producing a classroom news show (CF 02863). Their first research assignment will include a bus tour of our city conducted by the mayor. Students will then report their newly gained knowledge about their city via a broadcast news show. Through an introductory lesson of a citywide civics project, it came to my realization that my students knew very little about their hometown. I found this information surprising, primarily because the city itself is only one square mile; In addition, most of my students have lived in this city since infancy. This revelation led me to develop a project in which all of my various leveled students will have the opportunity to explore, learn, and share facts about their wonderful city. Students will use the iPad camera function to take photographs to document their bus tour and their newly gained knowledge about their city. In addition to their research, the students will also use iPads to access internet articles about the city. A green screen recording space will then be used to bring their learning to life through a classroom news show. The students will work collaboratively to both the create and produce their news show. Throughout the year, students will continue using green screen productions as a means to research, collaborate, and report our daily learnings experiences. The news show will become an integrated part of our classroom curriculum. I also intend this experience to provide my students (especially my English language learners) with many opportunities in which they will demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
