My students are all three to five years old and on the autism spectrum. I have some students who are non-verbal and some who are highly verbal but have deficits in social skills. Each student brings unique talents to our classroom and we, as teachers, learn from them each day. I have students who are practically non-verbal, but they can read any word. I have non-verbal students who are artistically and musically gifted. For example, I have a student who will sing a song she has heard for the first time with the correct words and tune, but she usually does not use her words for social interaction. I also have a student who struggles to remain engaged, who will sit for a three- to four-step art project and complete it with lovely detail. My school is very supportive of students with special needs. We all work together to help find the best strategies for teaching all students and meeting their needs.
