Bullying is a frequent and serious problem in our schools. One in six students is regularly bullied. My school is a Title I School - which means that we have a large population of students who are from a low socioeconomic background. Although my students are from a low socioeconomic background - with high expectations and the belief that all children can learn - the students at my school have made "Adequate Yearly Progress" for the last seven years under "No Child Left Behind". The challenge that I face is that when students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds, their interpersonal skills sometimes reflect the behaviors that they see modeled in their "at risk" neighborhoods. The goal of "Learning in a Bully Free Zone" is to teach students the skills to deal with bullies, as well as promote positive social skills such as cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution. The ultimate goal is to create a school with a zero tolerance for violence and bullying.
