I teach kindergarten in a small elementary school in East Oakland. We are a science focus school with a strong community of parents, teachers, and administrators who work closely to ensure that all of our students are learning. Next year we are transitioning our language program starting with kindergarten. We will be launching a dual immersion Spanish/English program, in which Spanish and English speaking students will be learning in both English and Spanish. 80% of my students are Latino/a (mostly immigrants from Mexico and Guatemala), 15% are African American, and 5 % are Asian. 95% receive free and reduced price lunch. My students enter kindergarten eager to learn and curious about the world and each other. However, many of them also enter kindergarten with significant emotionally traumatic experiences related to the effects of poverty and without significant preschool experiences.
