I teach second graders in Spring Valley, Illinois that are full of energy and love to learn new things. My school is in a rural district that has a 70% poverty rate. We also have a high number of special education students that include many children with ADHD. My students come from a wide range of economic and ethnic backgrounds. I also service a wide range of academic needs. Currently my district has "old school" desks with the chairs attached. These desks make it difficult for children to move around. Sitting on a hard plastic chair for many hours a day and being expected to learn at your greatest potential is a way of the past. My students need flexible seating options that will allow them to bounce, wiggle, and move to give them choices, maintain their attention, and to keep them actively engaged in the classroom. My goal is to implement flexible seating into my 21st century learning classroom.
