A class set of the mentor text, Esperanza Rising in our case, will help our students learn about human rights and the history of farm work in California while practicing annotating and close reading skills. This work will also align to student analysis of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights prior to reading Esperanza Rising so students can synthesize both an informational and literary text. When each student has their own copy of a text, they can write their thinking and responses to the text on sticky notes as they read and feel more ownership and engagement in what they are reading. Additionally, it is more environmentally friendly to have class sets of books year after year as opposed to photo copying chunks of text for students on copy paper.
