My students are split across the spectrum of social economics, learning ability, experience, and cultures. Our high school is in a lower socio-economic area, however it is an IB school so it pulls students from outside it's boundaries for the higher learning. I teach World Geography and AP Human Geography. In World Geography I need to start with the very basics because most of my students stay within a few miles of their homes, so haven't experienced much that surrounds them. On the other hand the AP classes, most kids are self motivated and have had more experiences outside of where they live. There is a 30% minority population at our school from all over the world. Most students are conversational in English, but in academic English they are less skilled. I am hoping that by adding books and resources to my curriculum it will help them both in their awareness of the world but also their literacy.
