When my project is fully funded, students will have access to flexible seating options that allow movement around their learning environment. Not every student learns best while sitting in a metal chair for hours at a time. In fact, research shows this is not how students learn. Students learn best when they are comfortable, can purposefully use their energy, and work in a position that meets their physical needs.
The benefits of flexible seating include increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. Not only will flexible seating help improve student achievement through enhanced learning, but my student’s physical health will also be improved.
If I haven’t convinced you yet…there is more. Through my experiences in the classroom, as well as hours of research, the benefits of flexible seating continue. One additional benefit is student choice. Flexible seating allows students to make choices that best fit their daily needs. Having many seating options means a student is not stuck with the same seating option every day. Another benefit is the ability to move while learning. Children need to move. They have infinite energy that often has no place to go. The flexible seating options I selected allow for movement, giving students a chance use their energy is a productive way, while not disrupting the learning environment. Lastly, flexible seating leads to easier collaboration. Students have more freedom to move around the room. This allows greater opportunities for students to work together while staying focused. I hope my passion for this project is clear, because I feel like I could go on forever.
