I teach 62 fifth grade students in a public school in a rural town in North Carolina. Over 55% of our students are from low socio-economic home situations, and over 40% of students in our county are considered to be overweight or obese. My co-teacher and I are both avid sports enthusiasts and we want to create an interest in sports and motivation to participate in various recess activities for our students. We want to teach our students that there are many different ways to get active and healthy. It is mandatory for students to have 30 minutes of PE/recess each day, however we have found that if students are not given options, they will wander around our playground area to just chat with friends. We want to encourage our students to play games, to interact with each other, to learn team-building skills, to learn sports-related skills, and to get active each day. Currently we do not have the equipment to do this with our students.
