I teach elementary school children who are at various levels of language acquisition. They have diverse cultural backgrounds including Mexico, Burundi, Congo, and Russia and attend a large elementary where they are working hard to fit in, learn the language, and meet academic expectations. Many of these kids are battling the odds as their parents have spent time in camps and came here as refugees. Others were brought here as immigrants for a better future. A lot of these kids don't receive much support at home due to their parents juggling multiple jobs, working nights, and dealing with depression or other emotional issue because of traumatic experiences in warring countries and growing up in poverty.
