I teach in a middle school high- functioning autism classroom. All of my students are diagnosed with autism, though they are extremely high functioning. I currently am teaching 10 students, varying in age and grade levels. This is a brand-new class, as it has only been in existence for a little over 2 months; however, even in this short period of time I am in awe of my students' growth in both academics and in their comfort in their own skin. School finally makes sense to them and they finally have a place to belong. My students have a great sense of humor, and are extremely hard-working. All of my students are extremely intelligent, though they have fallen behind in many academic areas. We work hard every day to fill these gaps, but they also need constant sensory breaks to allow them to continue this focus.
