I teach in a Title One public school. More than 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch, living well below the poverty line.
My students are a racially diverse group of 5th graders with quick smiles and eager minds. For some, the reading they do at school is the only reading they do, not because of a lack of desire, but due to of a lack of materials at home. Many families would love to provide their children with libraries at home, but the money to do so just is not there. Still, my students are full of joy and drive!
I am inspired by my students' will to learn every day and want to give them the tools and skills they need to be successful. One skill that any student in any school needs is to build up their reading stamina and be able to respond to what they read eloquently. When the books we have to choose from lack qualities to engage the reader, or have been read multiple times, it's easy to put them aside. I want to inspire them to get wrapped up in good books.
