I teach 18 special needs students of varying skills and abilities but all are functioning below that of their peers. I teach in a supportive and diverse elementary school with special needs classes, Spanish dual immersion and traditional classes. All students are made to feel important and supported. Once a week I incorporate an art lesson into my weekly curriculum and I see my students' confidence soar with this alternative form of self expression. My students need this activity for many reasons. Art stimulates both sides of the brain, develops eye hand coordination, stimulates perception, and overall, is just fun and exciting.
