My self-contained classes have shown awe and wonder at being able to play on the piano with me. The majority of the students have expressed interest in learning to play and having an instrument of their own. Learning how to play piano independently, and mastering rhythmic concepts using the rhythm sticks, will enable the students to have a sense of ownership and motivation in school. In my last school, I organized a piano recital for the special education classes at the end of the year. Students learned performance etiquette, and had the amazing experience of presenting their work onstage in front of family, friends and other teachers. Seeing the looks of accomplishment on their faces as they received their flowers and took their bows was proof that music makes a huge difference in self-esteem.
