At our Title I school in Nevada with approximately 650 students, 100% receive a free breakfast; statistics indicate 94% are on free or reduced lunches. Additionally, about 59.4% of the students are LEP (Limited English Proficient,) where English is not their native language. Only 33 1/3% percent, or eight, of my students list English as their native Language; the other 66 2/3%, or sixteen, have another native language. As our school recently added another kindergarten teacher, I now have twenty-six students in my class; twenty-four regular education and two special education students (for part of the day.) Most of the students have not had the early learning stimulation and opportunities that enables very young minds to develop and build the neurons and dendrites of the brain. This, in turn, aids in the growth of the brain connections and learning. Only three, or 12.5%, of my twenty-four regular education students went to prekindergarten. Also, the transiency (moving) rate is 49.5%.
